Overview

This is the way the world ends. That could've been the name of this book. Today, with climate change unchecked, we sit at the precipice of destruction, teetering on the edge, digging our hands into the dirt, scrabbling for purchase, for salvation.
Will we topple over the edge or, at the last minute, save ourselves?
Global warming, too long ignored, comes for us at last in two of the stories presented here. Both stretch the boundaries of the short story definition, approaching novella length.
Will the sweltering heat of a warming planet, coupled with rapidly rising waters and terrible storms, do us in, or will the melting permafrost of the frozen north set free an ancient, deadly virus to finish us off?
Frighteningly, both scenarios are far too possible. The possibilities I based the stories on are remote and almost certainly will never happen. Still, the idea of very rapid global warming or an unknown virus emerging from a frozen sleep as the permafrost thaws were just too good to pass up.

About the Author

Well, here I am. A 72-year-old man sitting alone in the dark, writing stories for you.
I am twice retired, once from the U.S. Army and, later, from another 20 years as a computer network engineer.
I retired from the Army as a Master Sergeant. Throughout my career, I specialized in Signals Intelligence. I spent over 20 years traveling all over the globe, listening to the communications of our enemies and stealing their secrets.
After my first retirement, I spent another 20 or so years as a computer network engineer before retiring a second time.
Now I write. You might call it a hobby as publishing costs more than I make in sales.
Many of my stories are strange. You might say they live in the shadows on the weird side of the street. Most of them start life as fragmented remnants of dreams and nightmares. I take the leftover bits and pieces and weave them into a tapestry of words.
When not writing, I spend my time playing with grandkids, camping, or traveling with Judy, my wonderful wife, across the U.S. visiting America’s beautiful cities and national parks.
I have self-published three books on Amazon. The first, Secret Warriors, Psychic Spies, is a true story. The book tells of my time in a top-secret government experiment in psychic warfare.
Two others (Stange Stories and Strange Stories II – The Empty Earth), both works of fiction, are collections of short stories.
My short stories have won several honorable mentions in various competitions and one semi-finalist award in a Writers of the Future contest.
