INTRODUCTION
Illustration, Books, & Hands-On Art

"Storybook Art" offers over 100 companion art activities
matched to children’s favorite picture books (ages 4-12) and
the wonderful illustrators of those books.

Literacy
Reading – and enjoying – books has always been the key to
success in school. Literacy is the basis for learning well, with
enjoyment. Comfort with art is natural for most children.
Couple art with books, and literacy becomes inspired.
"Storybook Art" allows children to become more aware of book
illustration by experiencing hands-on art techniques as part
of easy art projects. Children are thereby encouraged to read
– and re-read – their favorite books with new awareness and
enjoyment. Children will be inspired to create individual, self-
authored stories expressed through their choice of artistic style,
such as, drawing, painting, crafts, collage, assemblage, sewing,
and construction.

Reading and books take on new meaning for a child when
integrated with creative art in everyday life."Storybook Art"
invites children to explore hands-on art activities with materials readily available in most homes and schools.
The wide variety of activities require no expertise, and are equally appropriate for ages 4-12. Each activity builds new awareness about books, illustrators, and their art techniques.
Each illustrator is paired with a book, and presented to the child artist for an art activity of value.

"Storybook Art" introduces children to picture book illustrators -
some familiar and others new; to books that are classics and others destined to become classics. Most of the books and illustrators chosen are award-winning and of the highest quality and inspiration.

new ideas.

Children will see a relationship of book illustrations to their
own art explorations. A new awareness and appreciation for
books is sure to blossom and flourish.

Adults have a few important (enjoyable) assignments:
