About the Author

Lauren Wright Vartanian is a textile artist and the founder of Neurons and Nebulas, a platform on which she shares and sells her science-inspired art. Lauren is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU), where she trained in drawing and painting. She lives in Guelph, Ontario, with her family.

Keltie Thomas is a former editor of OWL Magazine and the author of many highly acclaimed books, including Rising Seas, Animals that Changed the World and Do Fish Fart?, which won the Award of Merit from the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority. She lives in Toronto, Ontario, with her husband and her cat, Scarlett.

Gr 8 Up—The perfect meeting point between stitch-based arts and science, this book is not only an informational treasure, but also a visual delight. Follow along with science-based terms, such as atom, virus, and zenith, as they are defined in succinct and easy-to-understand language. The accompanying stitch-based images work to help illustrate the concepts and terminology and motivate readers. Walking readers through an alphabet of scientific terms, Vartanian's combination of vibrant colors, rich textures, and artistic mastery combined with Thomas's explanation of the subject matter are sure to help fuel readers a desire to learn and create. With a variety of scientific subjects referenced within the terms in this book, there is something for everyone to enjoy and learn something new. This work is best suited to those who can either grasp the scientific terminology being referenced or have a passion to learn more about the terms being used, while being able to appreciate the stitch-based mastery involved. VERDICT Readers with an interest in either textile arts or science will love the visually dynamic combination this book presents.
