Description: This book, now in its second edition, presents comprehensive information on immune deficiencies from diagnoses to management. The book was originally published in 1973 under "Immunologic disorders in infants and children" and retitled starting with its first edition in 2014.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a comprehensive resource of all immune deficiencies. In addition, the book aims to present all aspects of such disorders including demographics, etiology, and diagnosis, as well as clinical features, pathogenesis, and treatment.
Audience: This comprehensive reference book targets several groups of audiences. Allergists and clinical immunologists who manage immunodeficient patients are the primary target group. However, allergy fellows-in-training, academicians, researchers, residents, and medical students will find this collection a resourceful reference.
Features: This is a large book of approximately 1,300 pages. It has 60 chapters divided into three parts: approach to patient, specific disorders, and management. As far as format, it appears that the chapters do not follow a uniform design. The chapters' length varies from five pages to 51 pages. The number of cited references varies from nine to 557. Some chapters end with a summary or conclusion while others do not. Some of the indices are not easily located in the text. I found chapter 1 ("Common presentation and diagnostic approaches") especially informative since it is more general and targets a broader audience. Other chapters are more specific and detailed and better serve the specialists.
Assessment: With over 100 contributors, this current edition serves as a comprehensive resource on immunodeficiency disorders. It presents an up-to-date reference book with detailed information on all aspects of the subject. This authoritative collection is a reliable resource for practitioners, academicians, and researchers in the field.
