Description: This is a quick reference for common statistical concepts and a guide to how to interpret data for clinical research.
Purpose: The purpose is to summarize key concepts in statistical procedures used in clinical research to enable readers/researchers to interpret statistical results. The authors do a good job of achieving this goal.
Audience: Healthcare practitioners and students are the intended audience. It would also be helpful for beginning researchers. Two of the authors are associated with the University of Oxford.
Features: The first of the book's three parts deals with summarizing and describing data and covers basic descriptive statistics. The second section covers the use of statistics in clinical papers. Major types of clinical papers are identified and the common statistics used are discussed. The final part contains a glossary, a description of symbols use in statistics, and a summary of software tools used in statistical analysis. As noted by the authors, those needing a detailed explanation of statistics must consult a statistics book.
