Description: This book constitutes the post-conference proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Statistical Atlases and Computational Models of the Heart: Imaging and Modelling Challenges, held in conjunction with MICCAI 2016, at Athens, Greece, in October 2016.
Purpose: There has been considerable progress in cardiac image analysis techniques, cardiac atlases, and computational models, which integrate data from large scale databases of heart shape, function, and physiology. Several efforts are now established to provide web-accessible structural and functional atlases of the normal and pathological heart for clinical, educational, and research purposes. These approaches are only effectively developed through full research scope across imaging and modeling communities. The workshop and the submissions in this book provide a forum of discussion for further development of statistical analysis and computational imaging and modeling of the heart.
Audience: It is aimed primarily at students, health professionals, and researchers who are looking to enhance their knowledge of further advances in cardiac imaging and statistical models of the heart.
Features: The 24 papers in this book were chosen from numerous submissions and cover topics such as cardiac image processing, atlas construction, statistical modeling of cardiac function across different patient populations, cardiac mapping, cardiac computational physiology, model customization, atlas-based functional analysis, ontological schemata for data and results, integrated functional and structural analyses, and preclinical and clinical applicability of these methods. There was a special focus this year on segmentation of left atrial wall thickness (SLAWT).Atrial wall thickness is an important parameter for biophysical electromechanical modeling of the atria and potentially important for planning ablation therapy for atrial arrhythmias. The data were sourced at St. Thomas Hospital, King College London, from patients who are being treated for atrial fibrillation and from individuals with normal anatomy. The ground truth was selected by consensus manual annotations using the STAPLE method. Three groups had their final results submitted for evaluation. A collate paper including detailed data description and the results from participating groups were written by SLAWT organizers and is included in this book in a separate section called challenge papers. Each chapter is well laid out in the format of Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, and Discussion. Each article is well referenced. There are adequate table and figures in each article for easy understanding. There were two keynote lectures at STACOM 2016, which are not included in this book.
Assessment: This is a valuable resource for those interested in keeping abreast of the latest advances in cardiac imaging statistical models and will serve to accelerate progress in the important area of heart structure and functional analysis.
