In the "starter" titled "Molly (the Mobile) Mendle," for example, the authors tell the story of mobile-phone-obsessed Molly who loves to cook. She disappears into her cell phone while texting at the grocery store, and students are asked to finish the story. Next is an exercise in Internet research to find a "Text Talk Dictionary"; students are instructed to use this to write an interview with Molly in which Molly answers questions using common texting abbreviations. Students are then prompted to gather international recipes and write about their favorite, as well as illustrate it and explain why they chose that recipe.
The workbook is color-coded for ease of navigation. The authors include valuable visual and organizational aids that are easily reproducible and helpful for generating creative ideas. Some copyediting errors remain (sometimes the word "fable" is capitalized, sometimes not; question marks are missing).
Although Starters: Book One is designed for Australian classrooms or homeschoolers, it is an easily adaptable and excellent workbook for those teaching outside of Australia.
