There’s a pleasant air of irreverence to this tongue-in-cheek sci-fi adventure. Slippery Jim DiGriz, the titular Stainless Steel Rat, is called upon to go back in time and undo the machinations of an evil time-master named “He” without causing time problems himself. Narrator Phil Gigante performs with just the right edge of sarcasm. As the Rat slips in and out of several time periods, including 1984 America, Gigante supplies the appropriate accents and colloquialisms, making the story exciting and authentic. Gigante’s almost over-the-top interpretation of “He” is perfect; any more would be too much. The Stainless Steel Rat’s tale is a fun journey for the armchair thrill-seeker in all of us.
