Overview

The book presents research that was undertaken to minimize e expenditure and effort in construction
for the building of an efficient power hammer. The resultant machine worked well without
modification except for re- mounting of the anvil. The book is organized thus:

  1. to facilitate decisions in design that should and to lead to simplicity and economy and to make it easy to
appreciate the effects of departures from ideal values of the parameters,
  2. to permit a design to be started from any of a number of fixed choices, for example: for a given hammer
head mass, or for a given spring, or for a given crank radius, or for a given motor power, and
  3. To illustrate the appliction of the research and analysis in the design of a particular machine.

There are a few mathematical expressions in the text, to assist the interested
reader to understand how the results were obtained. The reader who is
not familiar with the notation should be able to ignore these without losing the flow of the discussion.

Different readers will find different parts of the book of more or less interest.

Different readers will find different parts of the book of more or less interest.

A reader interested particularly in designing a machine might well look at the following first:
Chapters 3 SPRING HAMMER SPRING SYSTEMS, 6 DESIGN EXAMPLES, 7 CONTROL METHODS and
11 CONCLUSIONS; DESIGN PROCEDURE. In Chapter 8 SPRING DESIGN AND SELECTION there may
be only one section of relevance after the designer has chosen a spring form of interest. To illustrate
the application of the design principles, Chapter9 EXAMPLE OF A PRACTICAL DESIGN
describes salient features of a spring hammer that was built using these principles.

Chapter 4 ASSUMPTIONS AND SIMULATION METHODS might be of interest to those who want to
understand details of how the results were obtained, but probably does not contribute greatly to what
one needs to know for using the results.

Chapter 5 EFFECTS OF SYSTEM PARAMETERS
presents results of the author's research, and is the basis for most of the design guidance that is summarized
in other chapters.

About the Author

Robert Bogner enjoyed a very fortunate professional life as an electrical/electronic engineer, researcher,
and professor with experience in four continents. Throughout his professional life, he found making
things by hand was a welcome relaxation. A great pleasure has been in assisting others to develop
their capabilities in various directions, rather than to just help them. Perhaps too late in his life he
developed an interest in psychology because the principles opened up understanding of how many
people are moulded to find difficulty with particular patterns of thought and how to overcome
some of such barriers.

He has found that a focus on fundamental principles has been a guiding light; as principles, whether
in technology, science or humanities, can be used in various different situations. For example,
the same principles that are behind the
analyses presented in this book were based on his researches
in electronics and acoustics. Favourite principles are: “Always Be Curious”, and “If it ain’t broke, break it to
see how it works”.

Robert takes pleasure in the company and successes of two sons and a daughter, while sometimes
regretting that earlier in life he was too distracted by the fascination of professional challenges.

The present book arose from his wife giving him a forge early in his retirement. The fire took hold.
He has learned from visits to blacksmiths in eight countries; they have invariably been hospitable .
and generous with ideas. He enjoys making, exhibiting and selling a wide variety of “artist blacksmith”
products, items based on some whimsy, like a sole resting on peas. Devising and making many
weird tools and machinery for blacksmithing is at least as rewarding as creating the products.
