About the Author

Christopher C. H. Cook is Emeritus Professor of Spirituality, Theology and Health in the Institute of Medical Humanities at Durham University, UK. He is Chair of the Spirituality and Psychiatry Special Interest Group of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Honorary Chaplain at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust. He was recipient of the 2021 Oskar Pfister Award from the American Psychiatric Association for outstanding contributions in the field of psychiatry and religion.

Andrew Powell was formerly: Consultant Psychotherapist and Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry, St George's Hospital and the University of London; and Consultant Psychotherapist and Honorary Senior Lecturer, the Warneford Hospital and University of Oxford. He is Founding Chair of the Spirituality and Psychiatry Special Interest Group of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK.

Description: This second edition updates the first edition published in 2009 regarding the importance of spirituality and how it should be appropriately utilized in patient care.
Purpose: The book is intended as a research-based, clinical handbook to promote understanding of the role of spirituality in psychiatry, with the goal of improved treatment. Given that patients are often more interested in spirituality reflecting religious practices than the psychiatrist treating them, this creates an unnecessary gap that can hinder patient care. This book strives to be a bridge for psychiatrists to better understand and thus care for patients who wish to incorporate spirituality into their treatment.
Audience: The target audience is psychiatrists, but anyone who provides psychiatric care will likely benefit from this book. The authors are credible authorities.
Features: This book is divided into 18 chapters, each reviewing different aspects of spirituality including: spiritual assessments, various psychiatric conditions and their interactions with spirituality, different populations and how they differ in their approach to spirituality, how spirituality can hinder care, and how spirituality influences psychiatric treatment strategies. Within the chapters are various graphics and illustrations. Each chapter concludes with references, while a helpful glossary and index conclude the text.
Assessment: This is a needed update on spiritualty given the ever-expanding research and understanding of the diversity and importance of spirituality that is woven into psychiatric care. This book is an excellent reference on a wide range of topics regarding spirituality. As I read through the book, I was reminded of multiple interactions I have had with patients and appreciate the deeper understanding of how the spiritual beliefs of the patient are important to them and thus influence our relationship. This update provides a wider understanding of spirituality given the growing research available as well as different spiritual beliefs that have emerged. Future editions will be needed as research continues to expand. I highly recommend this book to any psychiatrists, particularly those who are currently not comfortable with spirituality and thus tend to avoid the topic in their interactions with patients. This book will help provide a different language to engage with patients in helpful ways.
