Description: This is the summation of a research study conducted to reflect nurses' experience with the nature of loss encountered in end-of-life care settings. Key findings of the book/study indicate how nurses' spiritual development impacts their proficiency in spiritual care.
Purpose: The purpose is specifically to share the results of a research study conducted by the author. Historically spirituality in healthcare has been a neglected field of study, with limited research available. This would hold true for the profession of nursing as well. The author's objective, which specifically is to share her study, is worthy. Unfortunately, the delivery, specifically the manner in which it is written, makes it difficult for the nonresearcher to read.
Audience: The intended audience is not clearly stated in the book and after reading the book, I am still unclear about it. It appears that the most appropriate audience would be those interested in the fields of nursing and spirituality, a somewhat limited audience. One could also surmise, as I did, that perhaps it was written specifically for other researchers. While the author's credentials appear stellar, she has limited national or international expertise in these fields.
Features: The book takes readers through the study, starting with introducing the rationale for the study, existing research, and participants. The author continues this process over 16 chapters divided into four sections. The book is dense and written in an academic format, discussing phenomenology and reflexivity. It is a difficult read, and should not be considered a guide for nurses and spirituality.
Assessment: This is research study that has been published as a book. The title is misleading, as it suggests to nurses and other healthcare providers that it would address issues of spirituality in a more narrative manner (as opposed to a research study). I would not recommend this book unless the reader is specifically interested in this type of research.
