In 2017, English synth pop icons
Depeche Mode embarked on their international Global Spirit Tour. Supporting their 14th studio LP,
Spirit, the journey was their longest trek to date as they hit cities across the Americas and Europe. They filmed their final stop in Berlin, releasing the full concert recording,
LiVE SPiRiTS, in 2020. Paired with their fan-focused documentary film Spirits in the Forest, the set showcased the best cuts from
Spirit -- including the epic "Cover Me" and single "Where's the Revolution" -- as well as their most well-known hits from
Violator and perennial fan favorites from early-era albums
Speak & Spell and
Construction Time Again. Deeper cuts from the darker days of
Ultra and
Songs of Faith and Devotion also make appearances, adding a somber tone to match the political heaviness of the
Spirit era. For diehard fans,
Depeche Mode deliver rare live showings of "Useless" and "The Things You Said," the tracks' first live performances in over a decade. A moving cover of
David Bowie's "Heroes" is also included, bridging the legacies of two of Berlin's Hansa Studio's most famed alumni. [The CD/DVD edition includes two discs featuring the live concert filmed in Berlin.] ~ Neil Z. Yeung
