Description: The title of this book signals the authors' emphasis on the need for a multidisciplinary approach to spinal disorders. It is a unique approach to a common condition.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an open discussion of the medical and surgical management of spinal disorders in general. Although an interesting new concept and a worthy objective, the authors failed to meet their goals, providing a book that is partial to pain syndromes in the back and bypasses all other specialties and subspecialties involved in the care of patients with spinal conditions, such as orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, interventional neuroradiologists, and therapists.
Audience: Neurologists, neurosurgeons, and general practitioners are the main audience for this book. This audience is appropriate, but the book could have broadened its appeal by discussing the establishment of an accurate differential diagnosis leading to referrals to the right specialties, such as interventional neuroradiology for investigation and/or treatment of spinal shunts. The authors are experts in the field who have contributed extensively to the understanding of spinal disorders.
Features: The book has many positive aspects, including the sections on specific neurological examinations in spine disorders and on the surgical differential diagnosis in those situations. However, it comes up short in other areas, including the use of diagnostic evaluation tools and spinal angiography for diagnosis and/or embolization of spinal AVMs and shunts, as well as the role of interventional neuroradiology, intraoperative monitoring, physical and occupational therapy, and each field's specific contributions to the clinical improvement of these patients.
Assessment: This is an average book on spinal disorders. The concept and purpose are good and it would be a perfect fit in hospital libraries with neurological and neurosurgical services.
