About the Author

Virginia Jean Herrod, known as Miss Jeanie to her students and their families, has been involved in early childhood education since 1981, when she began teaching in a Pennsylvania Head Start classroom. Ten years later, she relocated to South Carolina, where she continued her work with young children in a military childcare center at Fort Jackson. She also taught at a corporate childcare center associated with the local PBS station.

Jeanie began writing activity plans in 1993 and has been included in the entire award winning GIANT Encyclopedia series of activity books published by Gryphon House. Her past works include collaborations on Story Play by Mary Jo Huff and The Complete Daily Curriculum by Pam Schiller and Pat Phipps. She is also a Principle Author of the Learn Every Day curriculum published in 2012 by Kaplan Company.

Jeanie has a degree in Early Care and Education and 20+ years of experience as a trainer and peer educator at childcare centers and regional and national conferences. She is highly knowledgeable of education standards and how they apply to the early childhood classroom and has collaborated with major publishing houses on the correlation of education standards on several books, including Social Studies and Me by Sally Anderson, and Wild About Learning by the ‘Between the Lions’ staff.

Jeanie says, “I’ve been on child care purchasing committees and have labored over stretching the toy budget dollar. I’ve observed and participated in the play of young children from toddlers to school-agers and have a firm grasp of what kinds of activities they find exciting and what activities do not hold their interest.”

Jeanie resides in Morgantown, West Virginia.
