Description: This book is a review of the statutory structure and responsibilities, including new changes in the common law and enabling legislation, impacting U.K. hospitals. This is the seventh edition of the book since its first publication in 1947.
Purpose: The author indicates that the book offers "legal support not only to practitioners and teachers of the law relating to hospital but also, and importantly, to managers and health care practitioners who seek a guide to the law affecting their professional life." The book's audience, however, is limited to those lawyers and health care practitioners affected by the Comprehensive Health Service Plan and Health Services structure of the U.K.
Audience: This book aids meeting statutory and common law responsibilities for managing, counseling, or advising a hospital in the U.K. From that point of view, it appears to be a rather complete review of both English statutory and common law. The author has sufficient background to discuss the issues and has consulted with other U.K. practitioners with specific background in described areas.
Features: The book is complete and up-to-date. It includes statutory references up to and including 1993 and also contains a fairly extensive table of cases outlining the common law. The table of contents is clearly laid out, and it is easy to ascertain specific topics located within the volume.
Assessment: This book is a useful tool for the individual responsible for advising U.K. hospitals in their statutory or common law duties to patients. It is formatted in such a way as to be easy to follow and gives the user a rather clear description of hospital obligation. Its day-to-day audience is clearly limited, however, to the U.K. practitioner. The seventh edition appears to be of value because it incorporates the rather significant statutory changes since its last edition in 1978.
