About the Author

Jeff G. Konin, PhD, ATC, PT, FACSM, FNATA is a Professor and the Chair of the Physical Therapy Department at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island. One of the original authors of this textbook, Dr. Konin is recognized as a Fellow by both the American College of Sports Medicine and the National Athletic Trainers' Association for his contributions.

Denise Lebsack, PhD, ATC has been an Associate Professor of Athletic Training in the School of Exercise & Nutritional Sciences at San Diego State University (SDSU) since 1994. During much of that time she has served as the Athletic Training Program Director, and has coordinated 3 separate Self Study Reports for the Athletic Training Education Program's accreditation.

Alison R. Snyder Valier, PhD, ATC, FNATA is a Professor for the PostProfessional Athletic Training Program and Doctor of Athletic Training Program at A. T. Still University (ATSU) in Mesa, Arizona. She also serves as the Assistant Director of Research Support through Research, Grants, and Information Technology Systems, as well as a research faculty in the School of Osteopathic Medicine-Arizona, at ATSU.

Description: The title describes this book well. It explains a variety of special tests used in various orthopedic practices. The website resource does not offer much beyond the videos that demonstrate the special tests described in the book. Because the videos have no audio descriptions, users must use the book along with the videos. The previous edition, which came out in 2006, is the one I used in my undergraduate studies. The content has not changed much and the book is easy to understand for those who have enough knowledge in medical terminology.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a concise, pocket-sized guide to the most current and practical clinical techniques used during an orthopedic examination.
Audience: The audience includes any clinicians who may use orthopedic evaluation techniques. The book also could be used by medical students and other clinicians who are learning how to perform orthopedic evaluations for the first time. Each test is explained in a manner that novices could comprehend, and the videos are a convenient feature for visual learners. The lead author, Dr. Jeff G. Konin, continues to practice as physical therapist and athletic trainer and is a professor in the physical therapy department at the University of Rhode Island.
Features: The book covers over 150 tests, and each test is described using the same format: a summary of test positioning, action, positive finding, and special considerations/comments. some tests include evidence and References. Unless the book is for professors, references do not help the intended audience much. For example, the piriformis test includes references, but only for four out of numerous citations available online. The evidence sections may be helpful for researchers, but most do not suggest reliability of the tests, which is what clinicians really care about. The consistent use of the same patient and clinician throughout the book may be helpful for students who are looking for specific hand placements while practicing special tests. The best aspect of the book is that it is easy to use to look up a special test quickly. Although I am not a big fan of the spiral-bound format, others may find it makes the book easier to use. This edition is a lot thicker and heavier than the previous edition, which makes it less convenient for practitioners to use it as a pocket reference. The table of contents is well organized and categorizes special tests within a specific body part. The index is helpful for readers who know exactly what they are looking for.
Assessment: This is an excellent book, appropriate for students, professors, and clinicians as a guide or a reference. Important additions to this edition are the videos, some new special tests, and the evidence section for some of the tests. The video clips are useful for clinical students who are learning the evaluation techniques for first time. The new special tests and the section on contemporary special tests are ones I have never seen in a clinic as a practicing athletic trainer. The book provides the opportunity to learn new tests, but not all the tests described in the contemporary special tests seem necessarily useful in clinical settings. Examination of Orthopedic and Athletic Injuries, 4th edition, Starkey (F. A. Davis, 2015), has similar objectives and is similarly priced. Overall, the quality of Special Tests for Orthopedic Examination is excellent and I would recommend it to students, professors, and clinicians in need of a reference on this topic.
