Description: This is an updated multidisciplinary guide and concise overview of current medications, injections, splints, orthotics, and modalities that are typically prescribed for the management of spasticity.
Purpose: This edition is intended to provide updated reviews of newer medications to treat spasticity as well as a review of the evidence-based literature regarding the use of intrathecal baclofen. For the most part, the objectives are met.
Audience: The primary target audience is practicing clinicians, but the book is also a useful reference for students and residents who are currently in training.
Features: The book covers assessment tools used in measuring spasticity and discusses the use of stretching, splinting, orthotics, and modalities as part of the treatment plan for spasticity management. It also describes the different oral medications and injections, including botulinum toxin, phenol, and intrathecal baclofen, that are used to treat both focal and diffuse spasticity related diseases. The book delivers concise information in every chapter, making it useful as a reference. Many chapters have an evidence-based section, which is helpful. A nice appendix section contains information useful for practicing clinicians. The main shortcomings of the book are the minimal references in some chapters and the mention of the Ashworth scale as a measuring tool but not the modified Ashworth scale, which is one of the most common spasticity scales used in the U.S.
Assessment: This is good as a reference guide for clinicians who like a quick review of spasticity management. A nice feature is the inclusion in most chapters of sections presenting evidence-based data. The second edition is necessary to present up-to-date information such as baclofen pumps and the newer medications to treat spasticity.
