Overview

South America is an incredible place – for the traveler, for the adventurer, for the seeker. For those looking for something off the beaten path, for something completely different. For seekers of beauty, variety, intense culture and lively interaction. And – with its stunning contrasts, landscapes, history and a myriad of magical qualities – especially for the photographer.

From April 2011 to April 2012, I traveled through South America, hitting up nearly every country on the continent. I was an amateur traveler in every possible sense, on my first-ever backpacking journey – I had never even been away from home for more than two weeks at a time before I bought my one-way ticket to Guayaquil, Ecuador.

I was – and still am – also an amateur photographer. Armed with only a Canon point-and-shoot, I got creative with angles, learned the details of my pocket camera, and took advantage of the stunning scenes that unfolded all around me to take the best pictures I possibly could – pictures that represented the incredible things I was experiencing, the amazing people I was meeting, and the life-changing events I was going through. Pictures to let my friends and family back home know how and what I was doing – to share on Facebook or send via emails or post on my blog. Pictures that helped carry my South American story around the world.

This is a collection of the best photos I took during my year in South America.

About the Author

David Slenk was born in Annapolis, Maryland, and stayed there for the next 18 years. At age 22, he graduated from the University of Richmond with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a minor in Spanish. He didn’t speak anything but English, however, for the next three years, as he entered the business world and worked for a small consulting firm in the heart of Washington, DC.

In the Spring of 2011, feeling like he had stagnated in a life he hadn’t envisioned for himself, David sold his house and a good number of his possessions, quit his job and bought a one-way ticket to Guayaquil, Ecuador. The plan was to get to know South America – meet its peoples and cultures, learn and understand its history, and get to know better our big, wild, wonderful world. And if he happened to find a calling while he was down there, all the better.

Four months into a year-long trip he realized that the people he was meeting on a daily basis and the stories he was hearing every night – around dinner tables and over beers –were incredibly interesting and really should be more widely available to entertain and inform readers around the world. He searched the ‘net, realized no one was doing what he wanted to do, and decided that just maybe he had found his calling. He created SlenkDee LLC and began the process of “bringing stories from around the world, around the world.”

His first book, From The Grand Canyon To The Great Wall, is the first step in bringing SlenkDee’s vision to bear and can be found at www.SlenkDeeLLC.com, www.Amazon.com, and across nearly all e-book platforms. Grand To Great brings together professional authors, semi-professional bloggers and amateur travelers – 67 stories from 54 authors from all over the world, bringing our huge, wild world home to you the reader with an outstanding collection of stories, experiences, and thoughts from around the globe.

The pictures in South America: A Photographic Journey were all shot by David during his 373 days backpacking around the continent. Hopefully they represent a small slice of the incredible beauty and variety that South America offers visitors.

Feel free to let David know how he’s doing at David..
