Fletcher’s classic radio play focuses on a self-centered bedridden woman who accidentally overhears a murder plot on what seems to be crossed telephone lines. Susan Sullivan does a fine job of portraying a brittle, spoiled woman yet keeping her sympathetic enough for the listener to share her frustration when no one will investigate, and to worry as the murderers’ plan becomes clear. The rest of the cast ably supports Sullivan’s central performance. The play gives chills but fails to generate significant suspense, perhaps because of its brevity (22 minutes) rather than the performances. But it still packs the punch of a short, stiff drink.
