Overview

Composed by Matthew Cooper, better known under his ambient electronic pseudonym Eluvium, the soundtrack for Some Days Are Better Than Others, director Matt McCormick's tale of urban desperation starring Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney) and James Mercer (the Shins), was built primarily on damaged and discarded instruments (better to illuminate the plight of the broken, recession-beaten protagonists). While the symphonic ambience of Cooper's work as Eluvium is present throughout, as is his gift for pure, melodic melancholy, the arrangements are less verbose. Heavy on drone and fluidity, the "broken" instrumentation is never jarring; rather, Cooper coaxes life from the myriad keyboards with equal parts determination and gentleness, resulting in a series of sepia-toned audio vignettes that feel stuck between worlds, yet manage to transcend their incidental nature. ~ James Christopher Monger
