Overview

What is SAM?

Software Asset Management (SAM) is a business discipline in the management of an organization's computer software investment.

Why Do We Need SAM?

In businesses or organizations, the computer software investment grows in importance as day-to-day demands and consumption increases (e.g., the volume of all events that culminate the use of software resources and instances of software consumed by the user or computer device through access grants and installations). Many aspects of operation (e.g., purchasing, deployment, maintenance, disposal, due diligence, and compliance) benefit from standard management programs, procedures, and controls. These are also concerns in personal computer use, but the focus here is on large-scale use of software assets in organizations.

Under the Copyright Act of 1976, if an organization (person) fails to observe due diligence in managing software licenses and is found to be out of compliance due to variances between the terms of a software license and actual use, the software publisher is entitled to levy penalties of up to $150,000 for each infraction. (U.S. Copyright Office, 1976)
