Overview

Kaplan (Texas A&M U.) and Johnson (Kent State U.) present and test a general theory of the social and social-psychological processes involved in the onset and course of deviant behavior. The study is based upon a longitudinal data set obtained from 9,000 individuals who were seventh grade students in the Houston Independent School District in 1971. Some of the issues the study aims to address include what motivates individuals to perform deviant behaviors and what influences the stability of deviant behavior over time.
