Babcock Lumber Company, in the early decades of the twentieth century, was known as the king of timber. Beginning in 1905, the company had a massive operation up the mighty Tellico River near Tellico Plains, TN. The following account, seen through the eyes of Lula Belle Payne Ledford, relates some of the experiences of those living and working in the lumber camps of the remote wilderness in and around the present-day Pheasant Fields Trout Hatchery Rearing Pools.
