Overview

Snow White's Seven Patches: A Vitiligo Fairy Tale is a modern-day story with the classical theme of good conquering evil. You'll find the age-old ingredients of a magic mirror, poisonous apple, dwarfs, and romance here. However, this adaptation includes a vain mother who's so clouded by beauty myths that she keeps her own daughter a secret, while plagiarizing the workings of her mind. Everything falls apart when the good mirror finally speaks the truth.
  • Young readers with vitiligo will look at their own skin patches with a unique lens, finding interesting shapes and stories behind each puffy cloud of white.
  • Readers will be introduced to the firsthand-hurt that plagiarism can cause through Snow White's experience.
  • The loving dwarf family illustrates that helping people in need should be a priority in life.
  • Readers learn that not all princesses look alike.
  • The concept of "beauty is within the eye of the beholder" is exemplified by the prince and magic mirror.

"Life is not really perfect, even if you are so-called normal. Children must grow and overcome then move on through the many difficulties that arise in their lives, some can be the lack of understanding, sympathy and acceptance. For those who are disabled in one way or another, not perfect, this can be an ongoing reality. Jewel Kats has an insight into the world of children who have life stacked against them. This is just one of her retellings of a timeless tale geared to helping others, and if it can be done, righting a wrong."
--J.D. Holiday, author, illustrator, host of Book Garden Radio

"Jewel Kats entertains and engages, highlighting significant issues that resonate with children and adults alike. Jewel reminds us that despite wickedness, we can move on and get about the business of life, letting serendipity take us to wonderful places in hope. And just maybe what we think we might have, we will be able to achieve."

    CHAPTER 1

There once lived a very rich lady named Ivy. She thought the world of her own looks. Her beauty pageant crowns only added to her arrogance. Ivy made outrageous demands on her magic mirror once she became pregnant.

"Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the finest-looking woman of all?" she'd ask.

"Why you!" the mirror would respond.

"Good," Ivy would answer. "Now, grant me a gorgeous child."

After nine months, it came time to deliver the baby. Ivy hired a big name doctor to help. With one last push, a wailing baby was born.

"Your girl has all ten fingers and toes," the doctor said.

"Who cares?!" Ivy huffed. "Is she beautiful?"

He wiped the newborn with a towel. "She has ebony hair, a cupid's mouth, and ..." his voice trailed off, "seven white patches of skin. I'm afraid she has a condition called vitiligo."

    "WHAT?!!!" Ivy roared.

Ivy vowed never to let anyone see this baby. She bribed her doctor into keeping this birth a secret. Ivy hid the newborn inside a shed on her huge property. She checked on the child in secret.

As the baby grew, she came to be named Snow White. In time, she was home-schooled by Ivy herself. Snow was given the luxuries of novels, encyclopedias, and newspapers. As a young adult, she showed a flare for writing.

Locked in the shed, Snow was forced to write day and night like a machine. She never had a say over what she had to pen.

"You want me to write another children's book?" she asked. "For once, I wish I could write a love story ..."

"Don't even think about it!" Ivy snapped. "You're lucky that I've kept you alive, and well. The least you can be is obedient."

    Snow's head hung low.

Ivy tapped her high-heeled foot. "Now, have you finished the latest children's book?"

    Snow handed over her work.

Ivy smirked. "Marvellous." She pulled an apple out from her pocket. "Here's your usual reward."

Snow bit into the apple hungrily. "Thank you."
