About the Author

John Graham, MD, is a pediatrician and medical geneticist with more than 35 years of training and experience in clinical genetics, dysmorphology, teratology, developmental disabilities, communicative disorders and public health aspects of birth defects. He holds a lifetime appointment as a professor of Pediatrics emeritus at UCLA School of Medicine, where he is on the executive committee of the UCLA Intercampus Medical Genetics Training Program. Graham continues to treat patients at Cedars-Sinai and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Description: This is the fourth edition of Smith's Recognizable Patterns of Human Deformation, based on the original work by David Smith and Peter Dunn. This wonderful book has been revitalized masterfully by John Graham and Pedro Sanchez-Lara, who present a tremendous collection of carefully selected photographic material of invaluable use to clinical dysmorphologists. This edition also includes access to an ebook version.
Purpose: The goal is to review recognizable changes in human morphology caused by extrinsic constraints in utero. The emphasis is to differentiate deformations from true malformations. This is a very important point in clinical practice as management and prognostic implications of deformations differs greatly from malformations. As indicated by the authors, the child with extrinsic deformations can usually be interpreted as normal and parents can look forward to the restoration of normal form. The authors have accomplished their goals, which are extremely important in the field of dysmorphology and clinical genetics.
Audience: The preface does not make it clear for whom this fascinating book is intended. However, it is clear that it is appropriate for a wide range of clinical providers. For medical students, pediatric residents, and medical genetics residents, this is a unique source of knowledge, and for teachers, it is a wonderful tool to teach human morphology variations as influenced by fetal environmental circumstances. Seasoned medical geneticists also would greatly benefit from this book, as it will enable the development of a more objective differential diagnosis when evaluating children with phenotypic variances. The authors are well known in the medical genetics community with strong backgrounds in dysmorphology.
Features: One of the most impressive features of this book is the presentation of exquisite illustrations. It has a wonderful and detailed collection of images of human deformations. This fourth edition features an increased emphasis on the comparison with true genetic malformations. This is an extremely important aspect, and the authors provide information about deformations and suggest differential diagnoses to consider during the evaluation of affected patients. It is an extensive review that includes the most commonly seen clinical presentations of human deformations, from craniofacial anomalies to limb anomalies.
Assessment: This is a highly specialized book with no comparable competing publications. It is a high quality work with tremendous utility for clinicians involved in medical genetics. The authors have outdone themselves.
