Overview

Small Market provides an eye opening look into the reality that is the world of television news for budding journalists breaking into the business. All too often people who aspire to become news anchors or reporters think Diane Saywer and Brian Williams. After working a while in a small market, or small city, young journalists usually find that isn’t always the case. They aren’t making lots of money, working with the best equipment, or interviewing people with global influence. Small Market spotlights the experiences of journalists who have gone before them to enlighten these young journalists about the potential issues and challenges they could face in their small markets. The book also motivates them not to give up on their careers, as so many have, and to keep their heads up in the face of adversity.

About the Author

Darryl Hood is an accomplished broadcast journalist with more than 15 years experience as a news anchor and reporter. He knew since the age of 16 he wanted a career in television news. With the support of his family, friends and the guidance of several mentors, Darryl was able to fulfill his dream of becoming a part of a business he enjoys greatly. Darryl began his career as a reporter for the Orange County Newschannel (OCN) in Orange County, California one semester prior to graduating from California State University Northridge. From OCN, he was hired on as weekend anchor/reporter for KQTV in St. Joseph, Missouri. After a year and a half there, he took a gamble on Las Vegas, Nevada where he spent five years as an anchor and reporter. When Darryl left Las Vegas, he was given the opportunity to report for his dream station, KCAL-TV in Los Angeles, which also afforded him the opportunity to report for KCAL’s sister station KCBS-TV. Darryl then went on report for KCNC-TV in Denver, Colorado, and after that, headed back to Los Angeles to anchor the weekly newsmagazine LA This Week for LA CityView Channel 35. Darryl served as weekend anchor/reporter for WPTY-TV and its sister station WLMT-TV in Memphis, Tennessee. Currently, Darryl is primary anchor at WACH-TV in Columbia, South Carolina.
