About the Author

Erik Brooks is the author and illustrator of many well-regarded books for children and early readers including the 2011 Washington State Book Award winner, POLAR OPPOSITES and the IRA/CBC Children's Choices Selection, PRACTICALLY PERFECT PAJAMAS.

Erik holds a B.A. in studio art and K-12 teaching certificate from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He currently resides in Winthrop, Washington where he runs in the summer, skis in the winter, and relishes everyday this incredible freedom of moving through the world. He also tries to slow down whenever possible to let it all soak in!

Erik Brooks does a beautiful job with this book. His attention to the details is very pleasing... and the expressions on the animals faces are terrific. But what captured me most was the voice I heard in the story. I actually felt calm and peaceful when reading it--I could hear Quince, the sloth, tell me "we are doing something." Everyone needs to stop and appreciate what they have, and sometimes it takes an injury to give us that opportunity. I loved it and think everyone will!

This is an adorable story for young children. They will enjoy Erik's bright watercolor and colored pencil illustrations. But it's not a book for children alone. It's a great gift of hope and patience for the injured runner. And a reminder that slow and fast runners can be friends.
