Description: This is a compendium of sleep topics related to children.
Purpose: The editors state that much of the information in this book can be found scattered throughout the academic literature, and it was their wish to collect it in one place to propel interest and further study in the multidisciplinary area of pediatric neurosomnology. Too often in pediatrics, there is an overreliance on adult research. As this book illustrates, the concerns, physiology, and problems in children are quite often different from adults.
Audience: The editors' hope is that the book will be a useful tool for primary care providers, neurologists, sleep specialists, and others who care for children with sleep issues. I found it to be a well-written book, which lent itself more dedicated reading. Its structure is not very practical as an office resource for practitioners wishing to quickly browse a topic to confirm diagnostic criteria, evaluation strategy, or medication options. Nevertheless, the information provided by the authors (who are an impressive national cross-section of specialists) is quite comprehensive.
Features: Chapters cover the complex physiology and anatomy of sleep, common sleep topics such as obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, and those unique to pediatrics (Smith-Magenis syndrome, craniofacial disorders, congenital hypoventilation syndrome). Given the wealth of experience of the authors, these topics are covered in great detail.
Assessment: This book is unique in gathering such detailed information on pediatric sleep medicine in one place. As a practitioner, I would have found bullet points highlighting the diagnostic criteria, recommended evaluation, and treatment nice. There are boxes with clinical pearls or key points with each chapter, but their content and utility are variable. Overall, this is a very good bookshelf resource for anyone interested in pediatric sleep medicine.
