About the Author

Charles Ball (1780 - ?) was an African-American slave from Maryland, best known for his account as a fugitive slave, The Life and Adventures of Charles Ball (1837). Charles Ball lived in Calvert county, Maryland, until about age four. After his mother died in the 1780s, Charles and his other three siblings were all sold to separate purchasers.

Catharine Esther Beecher (September 6, 1800 – May 12, 1878) was an American educator and abolitionist. She was the sister of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Charles Waddell Chesnutt (June 20, 1858 – November 15, 1932) was an African American author, essayist, political activist and lawyer, best known for his novels and short stories exploring complex issues of racial and social identity in the post-Civil War South.

Ebenezer Davies (1808-1882) is the author of American Scenes and Christian Slavery: A Recent Tour of Four Thousand Miles in the United States (1849).

Nancy Bostick De Saussure (1837-1915) is the author of Old Plantation Days; Being Recollections of Southern Life Before the Civil War, published in 1909.

William Still (October 7, 1821 – July 14, 1902) was an African-American abolitionist in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, conductor on the Underground Railroad, writer, historian and civil rights activist.
