Description: This is a handy illustrated clinical guide to diagnosing and treating common skin disorders. Detailed color photographs allow readers to make accurate diagnoses by studying the clinical images. The accompanying text describes in correct dermatological language the characteristic findings, distribution of lesions, clinical presentation, appropriate laboratory work-up, and treatments. This edition updates the 2011 edition and includes a description of Zika virus dermatological findings, but unfortunately no accompanying clinical photos.
Purpose: The purpose is to teach nondermatologists and dermatologists in training how to properly diagnose and treat a multitude of the most commonly seen skin diseases.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists in training, medical students taking their dermatology elective, and primary care physicians who desire to improve their acumen in this area. Each chapter is authored by an expert in the field.
Features: With this thoughtfully organized handbook on common skin diseases, clinicians can quickly decide on the correct diagnosis or differential diagnosis and proceed with the appropriate workup and treatment. The index is at the front of the book instead of the back, making it much easier to access. The table of contents follows and is arranged by ethology and classification of the skin disorder (primary lesion). The color photographs are of good quality, and the advice is based on current established information. Important clinical points that are necessary to make a diagnosis are presented as bullet points and the normal clinical course of the disease.
Assessment: I also like Fitzpatrick's Color Atlas and Synopsis of Clinical Dermatology, 8th edition, Wolff et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2017), which is regularly updated as well. Both are fine references for dermatologists and nondermatologists. This book includes features that Fitzpatrick's does not, such as a handy appendix listing topical corticosteroids by brand and generic name and classifies them according to strength and lists the sizes of tubes/pumps commercially available. Even the back cover is useful, where there is a dosing chart for antibiotics for pediatric patients. The quick reference formulary is also well done.
