This text for the beginning midwife is a discussion of many of the basic psychomotor skills and principles necessary for midwifery practice. It is a well-indexed volume divided into short, succinct sections and contains numerous line art illustrations. The purpose is to teach some of the basic hand skills and assessment techniques necessary for midwifery practice and is directed toward the beginning midwife and the midwife who is returning to practice. These well credentialed and knowledgeable authors intend for this text to be used by the beginning midwife, the midwife who is returning to practice, and the midwife who is currently in practice. The established midwife in practice might find this volume a little too basic. It would, however, be an excellent volume to have on the reference shelf to use when working with students. The authors of this volume address many of the basic skills necessary in caring for the midwifery client from hand washing to perineal repair. Issues such as the principles of medication choice and administration, newborn assessment and care, and CPR are covered. Chapters follow a consistent arrangement, with objectives, definitions, discussions, and summaries clearly labeled. This format allows for easy movement within the chapter and between chapters. Whenever possible reference sources are cited. The authors of this volume provide lucid explanations of many of the basic psychomotor skills, principles, and procedures of midwifery practice. There are numerous in which these issues are covered in greater detail, but I believe this is an excellent book for the midwifery student, beginning practitioner, and for the ""quick reference"" shelf of the veteranmidwife.
