Overview

"Sixty Years of 141 Speedway - 1960 to 2020" is a massive book containing 212 total pages of historical content, including 182 pages of photographs, from each season of racing at the former quarter-mile asphalt oval turned third-mile dirt track, located in Francis Creek, Wis. The book was written by racing historian Dennis Darovich and former racer Bob Diener. Darovich has been an avid fan of 141 Speedway since 1973. Other avid fans of the track contributed to this unique auto racing book. Racing historian Bill Mueller wrote the foreword to "60 Years of 141 Speedway," while Diener, a past driver in the track's Sportsman division, provided many of the photographs in the book. The rich history of the 141 Speedway facility is detailed through numerous articles, driver point standings and advertisements from Midwest Racing News. Photographs from 141 Speedway photographers are also featured throughout the book, including Mike Schneider, Dick Jepson, Weber Brothers, Al Fortner, Dan Lewis, Chuck Look, Lee Lawrence, Mark Olson, J&D Photo, Zena Lodi and Trevor Frank.  Additional photos were contributed by John Surges (VMSC), Greg Martell and Bob Bergeron. Racing fans and historians will find "Sixty Years of 141 Speedway" enlightening, fascinating and hard to put down.

About the Author

Dennis Darovich has been a fan of racing at 141 Speedway since 1973. He earned the chartered property and casualty underwriter (CPCU) insurance designation in 1982. He graduated from college with a major in business and math in 1976 and earned a master’s degree in business organizational behavior in 1994. After authoring the book “Racing Past Memories” (RPM) in 2000, Dennis published a revised color photography edition of “RPM” in 2020. He also co-authored “70 Years of Plymouth Dirt Track Racing - 1950 to 2020” with George Baumann in 2021 and wrote "Racing Recollections - Plymouth Racetrack Fans & Drivers 1950-2021" with George Baumann and Verla Peichl in 2022. Dennis also notably located the undoctored Mary Moorman photograph of the John F. Kennedy assassination in 1983. He is also known for being the Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car Association historian.

Bob Diener has been involved in racing his entire life. His father started racing in 1958 and continued to compete through 1977, returning to win an Old Timer's Race in 1988 and a Street Stock mechanic's race in 2002 at the age of 69. Bob started his racing career in 1981 driving Fred Clast’s Modified, while serving as a pit crew member for Ron Luedtke, Jim Pitzen, Scott Vollbrecht, Justin Green, Pete Ostrowski, Dick Hed, Rick Hed, Lance Fassbender and Frankie Heimerl. During his racing career, Bob competed in the Modified, Sportsman, Street Stock, Grand National, Limited Late Model and Pro 4 divisions at The Plymouth Dirt Track, 141 Speedway, Beaver Dam Raceway and the Chilton Fairgrounds Speedway. His favorite race victory was the last Wisconsin Fans for Auto Racing event at Chilton in 2002, during which he received the winner's trophy in victory lane from Butch and Janet Hafemann. In 1999, Rick Hed earned the Rookie of the Year Award at The Plymouth Dirt Track and earned a record 10 heat race victories behind the wheel of Bob's Limited Late Model. Although he is now retired from driving, Bob still attends local races at tracks throughout Eastern Wisconsin. He also assisted in supplying photographs for three previous books, including Dennis Darovich’s “Racing Past Memories” (RPM) book in 2000, "70 Years of Plymouth Dirt Track Racing - 1950 to 2020" book by Dennis Darovich and George Baumann in 2021 and "Racing Recollections - Plymouth Racetrack Fans & Drivers 1950-2021" with George Baumann and Verla Peichl in 2022. Bob estimates that he has over 10,000 local racing photos in his collection.
