Overview

Late winter, and police detective Jake Hines is beginning to feel the effects of light deprivation; it's not only in the edginess of the citizens of Rutherford, Minnesota, but also in the escalating battle he's having with his girlfriend, Trudy. Sitting in headquarters talking about the winter depression may not make it go away, but it does offer Jake a chance to air some of his feelings. Then two emergency calls come in at the same time. A child has been critically injured in the yard of his house, and something approaching the proportions of an old-fashioned gang fight has broken out in the parking lot of Central High. As the department mobilizes to deal with these two events, Jake is told that the little boy is dead and that the emergency room doctor attributes the death to a gunshot wound. The witnesses all state, however, that there was no gun at the scene, and no one heard a shot. To complicate matters, one of the ringleaders in the school brawl was the chief's son and the first boy he hit has gone to the hospital . . . .

Editorial Reviews

OCTOBER 2009 - AudioFile

Detective Jake Hines returns in the fourth installment of Gunn’s mystery series. This time around, Jake finds himself in the midst of a growing depression brought on by lack of sunlight during the cold winter months in Minnesota—but also by the increasing tension between him and his girlfriend. However, he must put the bad feelings aside when two related incidents are called in, with his department head at the center of the drama. Narrator Kevin Foley delivers a powerful performance, letting the character of Hines seep into his every word. Hines is a troubled character who, nevertheless, puts the greater good before his own problems. Foley's delivery is as sturdy and steadfast as can be. L.B. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

I Love A Mystery

a page-turner . . . a dandy, with a well-developed plot, sharp characterization, and a fluid style.

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly

To describe Gunn's (Five Card Stud, etc.) fourth Hines novel as outstanding may be an understatement. Its prose is crisp as a cracker. On a typical cold, gray February day in Rutherford, Minn., everybody seems to be in a bad mood. Chief of Detectives Jake Hines's lover has inexplicably blown up at him and walked out. Hines's boss, Chief McCafferty, is forced to plan a retirement party for an officer no one likes. The department is in the throes of a computerization beset by bugs. And suddenly normally peaceful Rutherford High explodes into a donnybrook among members of the hockey team in the school parking lot that sends one boy to the hospital. The assailant is McCafferty's son. But the worst is yet to come: a small boy, standing in his front yard, waiting for the school bus, surrounded by children and adults, is shot dead without anyone hearing the shot. Hines, still new to his post as chief of detectives, takes charge of the investigations with admirable and plausible efficiency. The crime is a heinous one and, as with all the other threads in Gunn's complex procedural, it is dramatized realistically, with intelligence and insight. There's humor and humanity here, but nothing cute or cozy. All the minor characters are well realized and credibly motivated. Especially impressive is the "minor" matter of Jake's domestic flare-up, which is bound to make many readers squirm with recognition. Gunn's latest is a hard-to-put-down thriller an excellent piece of craftsmanship. Agent, Jane Chelius. (June 15) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
