Sip Lake
Owen's friend talks him into moving to Cypress City, Florida, telling him that the fishing is great but also hoping to put him to work selling real estate. Owen is interested in fishing but wants nothing to do with real estate. "You were a Hospital Corpsman in the navy, right?" his friend asks, and gets him an interview at the local hospital. So Owen is an orderly, and his first night on the job he meets a nurses aide, Tina Gardenia. He is immediately smitten, but soon find this is not reciprocal. Owen encounters hospital patients, retired folks, neighbors, and new friends during this summer of 1977, and gradually passes from extreme naivete to maturity. He comes to learn what true love is, in the novel filled with all things Florida.

About the Author

Joe Basara arrived in Florida with his family in 1955. He grew up in West Palm Beach, served in the U.S. Navy, and graduated from Florida Atlantic University in 1976. He believes that the sand, sea, flora and fauna of this tropical land infused his spirit, and tries to fill his novel, Sip Lake, with all things Florida. So, some of the names of characters and places echo this reality, though some may feel it silly. The people Owen Cloud meets in Sip Lake, each with their own unique version of reality, help to move him from naivete toward a greater maturity.
It is a comedy, with little or no violence. Boring? Charming? See for yourself!
