Overview

Frank Sinatra, an enduring mass-media personality, was not only an accomplished musician, film actor, and concert performer but also a spokesman for civil rights, a humanitarian, and a cultural trendsetter. This bibliography culls material from a variety of disparate sources and catalogues the numerous writings that encompass Sinatra's accomplishments, public persona, and cultural impact. In addition to the unique listing of liner notes, the books, book chapters, articles, and Internet websites span the 60 years that trace the beginning of Sinatra's career in 1939 through his death in 1998.

About the Author

LEONARD MUSTAZZA is Associate Dean and Professor of English and American Studies at Pennsylvania State University's Abington College. He is the author of numerous books including Ol' Blue Eyes: A Frank Sinatra Encyclopedia (Greenwood, 1998) and the forthcoming Frank Sinatra and Popular Culture: Essays on an American Icon (Greenwood, 1999).

Frank Sinatra's daughter Nancy called him "the most documented entertainer in history," and this book goes a long way toward chronicling that documentation. Separate sections describe and often evaluate books, book chapters, articles, liner notes, and even web sites and chat rooms about the singer, whose fame spanned seven decades. An appendix lists over 200 articles and special magazine editions commemorating Sinatra after his death in May 1998. Mustazza (English & American studies, Pennsylvania State Univ.) already has three books on Sinatra to his credit, and he uses his thorough knowledge of the man and his art to create vivid, concise annotations for 900 entries. But the sheer bulk of information here may overwhelm all but the most devoted Sinatra scholars. The section on book chapters seems somewhat redundant, since most of the chapters mentioned are from books listed in the books section; the section on liner notes is also problematic in that some of the pieces are analyzed at length while others are not even described. The most vital information about the recordings--the songs included on each--is never fully documented. While this work may be useful in large music research collections, Mustazza's Ol' Blue Eyes: A Frank Sinatra Encyclopedia (LJ 6/15/98), with its lengthy bibliography and complete song information and a selection of photos, is a better choice for most public and academic libraries.--Vivian Reed, Long Beach P.L., CA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
