Obviously, the thing to do was quit the band and return to the life he'd had two months ago. No interviews. No fans. No long-lost lovers.
But Ben couldn't imagine losing the trumpet, now that he had regained it. The sound of the trumpet was life itself – exuberant, beautiful, sassy, fun. Every atom of his being felt alive, onstage.
When the band broke up, part of him had gone silent. He had almost forgotten that it existed. Now he had a second chance.
He also had a second wife, their infant son, and full custody of his smart, silly ten-year-old. He could not break his daughter's heart again.
Surely, Ben could find a way to avoid the temptations that ended his first marriage. Surely, he could find a way to handle the long-lost love who wants him back.
How hard could it be?
