Overview

Tenor Javier Camarena has truly been hitting his stride, and well-publicized occurrences of enthusiastic encores at the finicky Metropolitan Opera may have helped place this album on classical best-seller lists in late 2022. Another factor was certainly the repertory here; the Signor Gaetano of the title is Gaetano Donizetti, and Camarena almost completely avoids the big Donizetti hits. "Una furtiva lagrima," from L'elisir d'amore, is there for those who have to have some, but even that is done in a fresh way with a historical-instrument performance from accompanying orchestra Gli Originali providing an accompaniment with some texture. Camarena offers selections from such unknown Donizetti operas as Marino Faliero, Caterina Cornaro, and Rosmona d'Inghilterra, works that failed for one reason or another and dropped out of the repertory yet contain individual scenes that are fully representative of Donizetti's art. Camarena injects these with full commitment to the text. This is the real reason for the success of the album; Camarena is a fine singer with flexible top and bottom ranges, but beyond this, he is a superb communicator. Sample the selections from Marino Faliero, based on the story of the titular Doge of Venice during medieval times. There are numerous small details revealed in the authentic instrumentation, and also authentic is the sound, recorded at the Teatro Gaetano Donizetti in Bergamo for maximum idiomatic quality. This is the ideal gift for the Donizetti lover in one's life. ~ James Manheim
