Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was trained for medicine, which he entered in 1882. Fortunately, his practice was not successful and he began writing to fill out the time. His first Sherlock Holmes novel was A STUDY IN SCARLET.

Holmes appeared in 56 short stories and three novels: THE SIGN OF THE FOUR, THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and THE VALLEY OF FEAR.

In THE SIGN OF THE FOUR Sherlock Holmes solves the mystery of the Indian Treasure for Miss Mary Marston, remaining, as always, enjoyable and enigmatic.
