Overview

To all those who read Hesse's "Siddhartha". Many people think the book was written about the Siddhartha who became the buddha - which brings forth "Siddhartha the Warrior Prince" unique angle. Written by author Kyra Pahlen, this book tells us about the man. Not the myth. This Siddhartha is a young man, made of flesh and blood, who takes the reader to 6th century Asia. The author succeeds in creating a 3D Avatar of the times that puts everything into perspective, and has the reader meet the Kings, the World Changers, the Thinkers of the times - and have fun following them as they battle and scheme over the coveted, burgeoning, Silk Road - while finding out how and why did Siddhartha set off on his extraordinary quest, what was the story behind it - and what prompted him to do it…

Never having written a novel before, but compelled to do so, Kyra started writing the story of Siddhartha, a young man born into a wealthy, noble, warrior caste; who, after witnessing the death of his wife, the destruction of his native land by the neighboring warring kingdom, can no longer tolerate a mundane existence and sets out to find answers that enable him to cope with the conditions imposed upon himself and the rest of the human race.

It is also the first book that delves into Siddhartha the man's life based on a comprehensive, overall, presentation of the religious-socio-political tapestry of the times. I began researching the subject matter: in ignorant bliss I walked into a library in Tokyo and asked for a book on the life of Buddha (to use as a base for the script): there was none. I retrieved a little information that fitted the vision I had. I made some calls to various Universities, nothing. I flew to London, to Thailand, to Los Angeles, and finally to Paris in search of a book on the life of Buddha. As I traveled, I gathered information, texts, interpretations and visuals. I was amazed that no book on the life of Buddha existed. Oh, there were myriads of books dedicated to the interpretation of his words, and just as many that spoke of Buddha's philosophy in colorful parables, but nowhere was the story of his life as a man to be found. More and more I wondered what happened to this particular human being that motivated him to leave the life we know to go and search for a solution. Finally in Paris I met Professor Andre Barrault who was one of the five specialists in the world on the life and times of the Buddha. He guided me. His extensive research, novel interpretations, and analysis of his findings gave me the keys to a fascinating story that sounded plausible… and that's in the book...

“Siddhartha, the Warrior Prince” was published in German (“Buddha ein Gottliches Leben”), Spanish (“Buda el Principe Guerrero,”) and French (“Buddha le Roman de sa Vie.”) This first literary novel on the life of Siddhartha Gautama was praised by the Special Envoy of the Dalai Lama in DC, won the United Nations Writers Award in New York, was acclaimed by known writers such as Larry Collins – and praised by Media in the German, Spanish and French speaking languages.has won many awards and is currently being made into a film. I hope the producers won't get reincarnated as snails...or worse... Kyra has an exceptional international background which helped make this book into a fun read - a page turner that leaves the reader happy, and owner of an additional inner world.

The writing and the finished book had, and still has, a great impact on Kyra Pahlen's life.

About the Author

Many have asked me why I wrote this book. There are several answers. Here is One.

My childhood was populated by the Gods and heroes that abound in world mythology. They were the characters I liked best as they represented the Archetypes of what we are. Pallas Athene, Thoth, Amaterasu, Baba Yega, the fire horse; I loved them all. Each represented a dimension of vivid imagery and meaningful symbology one could visit and enjoy; this ability remained with me all my life. The abode of the eastern divinities was one of my favorites. There I would spend time with Shiva, Brahma, and all those impressive divinities. In the center of that realm reigned a marvelous entity, Buddha. As a child, I looked at him, and the serenity of his smile touched me very deeply, and stayed with me. At one stage I wanted to become a hermit. So I read and read all about monks and hermits who chose to live alone and seek a sacred form of happiness. Although that interest eventually drifted away, the feelings I brought back from my visitation in that "domain of the solitary" always lingered somewhere in the back of my mind, and the door to the dwelling of the Gods remained open to me in later years.

I believe that many of us have our life knowledge deeply ingrained in ourselves, and it is merely a matter of probing to find it. That knowledge comes to me as a voice, and that voice told me when I reached the age of thirteen that I was going to have a turbulent and difficult life. So far, it has been right. As life progressed and the obstacles presented themselves, the fleeting image of that smile on Buddha's face would visit me, and I could not help wishing that some of that serenity was mine. It would serve at this point to explain that I was born with a passionate, impatient but kind disposition. So, attracted by Buddha’s enigmatic smile that in her eyes, felt that something was missing to the story told thus far – and set out to discover what really transpired. Otherwise, I have done many things, from a fishing company on the island to Sakhalin, to a script on Toussaint l"ouverture, going into production soon - and written many scripts that are in development stage.
