About the Author

Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855) was the author of the classic novels Jane Eyre and Villette. Her two sisters, Emily and Anne, were also extremely talented writers, the authors, respectively, of Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey.  Charlotte’s writing brought about a new type of female character who was strong enough to overcome hardship.
