Overview

SHIRLEY, the second novel by Charlotte Brontë, follows the life of Shirley, a wealthy heiress, and several other figures, including Robert, a mill owner. Set in Yorkshire in the period 1811–12, during the industrial depression resulting from the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812, much of the novel depicts the suffering of laid-off millworkers.
