Description: This book covers medicine of small ruminants, including sheep, goats, and cervids, from husbandry to common surgical procedures and reproduction. This is a third edition and is also available in a digital version. The previous editions in 2002 and 2012 did not include cervid medicine.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a resource for veterinarians to use for small ruminant medicine. The addition of cervid medicine to this edition has improved the content of the resource. Access to the online version provides a useful resource for practitioners in the field to help their clients and patients.
Audience: The target audience is veterinarians. I believe it is a good reference for knowledgeable sheep/goat/ cervid owners as well as veterinary students and residents with an interest in small ruminant health. The book provides an excellent resource for practitioners with sufficient levels of information that are useful to a variety of users. It is co-authored by experts in the field of small ruminant medicine.
Features: The book covers all aspects of small ruminant medicine including how to handle each species safely, herd management, and diseases affecting each organ system. The addition of cervid medicine adds value for practitioners since there is limited reference material available for this species. There are many useful pictures to aid explanation of principles or techniques. The book appears to be the same as the online book.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource for veterinarians, students, and residents. It presents current information in one resource for all aspects of small ruminant health. The updated version is an improvement with its addition of useful, practical information on cervids.
