Dr. Cheney Duvall struggles against gender equality issues in the post-Civil War South as she works tirelessly to provide medical support to a small Arkansas settlement. At her side is her faithful nurse, Shiloh Irons, a strong medic who falls in love with the area's local folk healer. Medics and residents alike are threatened by an unscrupulous land developer. Kate Forbes presents a gentle interpretation of this story of feminine faith and determination. She appears to want to deliver the moral message of the text as well as the plot. Many of her characters are barely distinguishable in tone of voice or dialect, but the story remains easy to follow and engaging. R.P.L. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine
