Overview

Imaginary friends should be a comfort when other consolations fail. But what if these longed-for companions think different? What if they're none too pleased to be summoned? What if untamed magic can spawn creatures from daydreams or nightmares? Could something eerie half-glimpsed in a shadow actually be there?

Shadow Histories of the River Kingdom introduces a brand new fantasy setting from acclaimed author Juliet E McKenna. This volume brings together stories previously available in a range of publications, not all easily found, as well as some new material.

Welcome to the River Kingdom, where shadows can be all too solid and dangerous.

About the Author

Juliet E McKenna is a British fantasy author, living in the Cotswolds. She has always been fascinated by myth and history, other worlds and other peoples. After studying Greek and Roman history and literature at Oxford University, she worked in personnel management before a career change to combine motherhood and book-selling. Her debut novel, The Thief's Gamble, first of The Tales of Einarinn was published in 1999, followed by The Aldabreshin Compass sequence and The Chronicles of the Lescari Revolution. Her fifteenth epic fantasy novel, Defiant Peaks, concluded The Hadrumal Crisis trilogy.

She reviews for the web and print magazines notably Interzone and Albedo One, teaches creative writing from time to time and writes diverse shorter fiction. These stories range from contributions to themed anthologies such as ‘Alien Artifacts’ and ‘Fight Like A Girl’ to shared-world projects such as Tales from the Emerald Serpent and the serial novella ‘The Ties That Bind’ for Aethernet magazine. She’s also had the opportunity to write a handful of tales for Doctor Who, Torchwood and Warhammer 40k. Always enjoying the challenge of something new, she is currently exploring the possibilities and opportunities of independent ebook projects alongside traditional publishing.
