Description: This second edition provides updated practical information on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The last edition was published in 1998.
Purpose: In the context of significant rapidly rising STDs worldwide including in the Unites States, this book seeks to provide the general public with basic and accurate information about genital anatomy, common STDs, and safer sex.
Audience: The book targets anyone who is sexually active and therefore provides useful information for the layperson as well as STD educators. The book is written by an experienced STD physician.
Features: In the preface, the author identifies some common myths about STDs and subsequent chapters address these myths. The first section includes chapters on genital anatomy, key to symptoms, what to expect during an STD examination, and tips for good communication among partners. The final chapter in this section describes the 12 guidelines for "safer sex." The second section includes chapters on common STDs including chlamydia and herpes as well as other common non-STD genital problems such as yeast infections. Chapters also cover viral hepatitis and HIV. The book concludes with a glossary of terms, list of references, and an index. Illustrations are in black and white. A nice feature in the chapters is the inclusion of short sections that highlight important key messages.
Assessment: This is a useful resource for any sexually active person or STD educator. Given the rapidly changing nature of this field, this second edition provides useful updated information.

Written by an experienced physician, this book provides a complete medical discussion of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). It readily adapts to various purposes (e.g., review of symptom, review of a disease, review of safety measures) through an easy to access format. The purpose is to provide accurate information and guidance to sexually active or potentially active persons. The expectation is that understanding, rational planning, and open communication will help to reduce the risk of STDs and will empower patients to take responsibility for their own health. Although the book is written as a guide and reference for patients, it can also serve as a model for teaching and advising patients. As such it would be of interest to all healthcare providers. The most useful feature may be the organization of information allowing the reader to easily access discussions of key symptoms and appropriate management. The patient can then readily find additional information as needed from the STD encyclopedia, and the section defining basic anatomy. Terminology is defined in the glossary and information is completely indexed. This is an excellent, well-conceived, and well executed book that includes complete discussion of STDs and significant information pertaining to health maintenance. The author's matter-of-fact style is objective and unbiased. It should be useful to patients of all ages, both sexes, and all sexual orientations. It would be worthwhile reading for healthcare providers as well.
