Description: This book provides basic information and guidelines for discussing sexual health with patients in a primary care setting.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide general practice guidelines in sexual health promotion for the practitioner in primary care. Written by experts in the field of sexual health promotion, it provides a reliable resource for general practitioners. Such a resource is crucial in primary care, because of the sensitivity of the issue for patient and practitioner and the risk of HIV/AIDS to the general population. I was impressed by the attention given to the sexual health promotion needs of teens and men. These two groups are at high risk yet have minimal contact with healthcare providers. I believe objectives were met.
Audience: This book is written for practitioners in general practice. More specifically, I think this resource is ideal for students in nursing, medicine, and health education. Nurse practitioners in family practice, internal medicine, and pediatric and adolescent health would benefit as well. Based on the credentials cited, the authors are credible.
Features: Illustrations were not included nor necessary. The style of writing allowed information to be readily retrieved and easily attained. The references are current and pertinent. The table of contents is adequate. The overall appearance of the book is pleasing.
Assessment: Written by experts in the field of sexual health promotion, this book is not intimidating. It is concise and explicit, yet provides simple guidelines for discussing a very delicate subject, in almost any practice setting. This book serves as a quick reference. Sexual health promotion is a subject that deserves much more attention than it is currently receiving in primary care and other health promotion activities.
