This book consists of transcripts of a series of speeches delivered at Trinity College, Dublin, during which scholars were each invited to review "the contribution of a great scientist to our understanding of behavior and mental processes." Unfortunately, the book suffers from the deficits common to such collections of invited papers-inconsistency and incompleteness. While the chapters on Francis Galton and on Konrad Lorenz and Nikolaas Tinburgen do a fine job of delineating the contributions of these nonpsychologists to the study of mind, the chapter on William James hardly mentions James himself but instead discusses the speechmaker's line of research. The chapters on B.F. Skinner and Jean Piaget are interesting but concentrate on limited aspects of their subjects' activities. Any library containing reasonably up-to-date reference sources in the social sciences will have little use for this collection.-Mary Ann Hughes, Neill P.L., Pullman, Wash.
