Overview

Sepsis is a syndrome or sometimes it is a clinical condition evoked by uncontrolled endotoxin-reactions. These pathophysiological alterations can disturb the organism's homeostasis leading ultimately to a condition of severe organ dysfunction which in itself means a bad prognosis for patient survival. In the last decades researchers and clinicians have been involved in process directed to a better understanding of the basic mechanisms of sepsis and MODS. The best goal will be the achievement of preventive measures and optimization of management in patients suffering severe infections and critical conditions. This objective represents a true challenge at the dawn of the XXI century.

Purpose: Provided is a collection of essays, highlighting recent clinical developments and research initiatives in organ dysfunction, particularly as they relate to infectious complications in the intensive care unit.
Audience: The senior trainee or practitioner would benefit from this collection of essays. The editors and contributors from the international critical care community are noted for an interest in infectious organ dysfunction.
Features: Sixteen chapters are included. Initial chapters describe the epidemiology and scoring systems used to describe the course of infection and organ failure complicating this problem. Subsequent chapters describe experimental and clinical work investigating mediators of this process, including tumor necrosis factor, interleukin-1, prostaglandin metabolism, and manipulation of oxygen delivery and consumption. The concluding chapters describe recent work in neuromuscular dysfunction and prevention strategies. Essays are concise and well written with an appropriate reference list containing seminal works. Some citations date to within one year of publication. Black-and-white illustrations and tables reproduce well, but are infrequently used. The table of contents groups chapters according to content.
