About the Author

Dr. Alan Wu is a Professor of Laboratory Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco. He is the Co-Director of the Core Laboratory at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. His research is focused on biomarkers of cardiovascular disease, clinical toxicology, and pharmacogenomics. In this capacity, his clinical and research laboratory conducts testing for routine analytes in blood, urine and cerebral spinal fluid for electrolytes, metabolites, hormones, proteins, and biomarkers. His particular area of interest is in cardiac biomarkers for acute cardiac diseases. He received a B.S. in both Chemistry and Biology at Purdue University and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Illinois. He was a professor at the University of Texas and the University of Connecticut prior to his current position at UCSF.

Description: This book is a compendium of multiple-choice questions for, as the title states, "self-assessment Q&A in Clinical Laboratory Science." It is essentially the fifth edition of Clinical Chemistry Self-Assessment, originally published in 1982. The content and title has evolved over time, with the second edition published in 1989, third in 2000, and fourth in 2008, with a new title retained for this edition.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide a self-assessment guide for the "ever increasing scope and range of topics" encountered regularly by clinical laboratory professionals. These are worthy objectives somewhat met by this edition.
Audience: This book is intended for clinical laboratory professionals - i.e., clinical/medical laboratory scientists in training or practice, laboratory medicine or pathology residents or fellows, and laboratory directors. It would be of interest to any clinical specialty reliant on clinical laboratory testing for patient diagnosis, treatment, and management. The authors are credible authorities in their subject matter.
Features: This 475-page book has a lot of questions for readers to assess their fund of knowledge. It is no surprise that there is a heavy emphasis on clinical chemistry (true to its 1982 origins) and toxicology. Other areas of the clinical laboratory (e.g., molecular diagnostics, serology, microbiology, hematology, urinalysis, etc.) comprise much smaller sections. I very much appreciated the inclusion of questions around informatics and point-of-care testing, areas which arose and/or greatly expanded since the previous 2008 edition. What I really liked was the heavy emphasis on clinical correlation; many questions are framed with a brief clinical case. I also like the answer sections - the correct answer is explained and often there is discussion on why the incorrect answers are incorrect. I have to admit, given the stellar reputation of the authors, I was surprised to find inconsistencies and/or errors. For example, in the section on antiquated tests, there is a question about the appropriate test for fetal lung maturity. Yet there was no mention that professional societies (e.g., ACOG) circa 2019 have recommended instead against such testing altogether, rendering this question moot. There is at least one outright (glaring) error - the image of a "pinworm egg" in the urinalysis and stool testing chapter (question 23) is in fact a Trichuris trichiura egg.
