All sixty-three seventh graders, orbiting the twelve tables that made up the cafeteria's seating area. Caroline Mason stood at the edge of the cafeteria, clutching her lunch tray and watching the other girls drifting toward their tables, drawn by the gravitational pull of friends and laughter and routine. And even though the room was bright and full of noise, she still felt like she was drifting at the edge of space. Everyone had a table. Caroline used to have a table.
